FORT MEYERS, FLORIDA: Dillon Atkinson, a Florida man, was accused of raping a 15-year-old girl on Thursday, Jan. 5. According to court documents, the defendant met the girl while she was playing the online video game Fortnite and now faces charges of indecent or obscene behavior and a charge of assaulting a victim aged between 12 and 16 . Atkinson defended himself after being cautioned by authorities accusing him of “poor understanding of age of consent laws”.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the victim’s parents called the police after examining her school-supplied computer and noticing chats between her and someone using the email address.[email protected]’ later revealed to be Atkinson. After confronting chat logs, the victim admitted she was involved in “a sexual relationship with a 26-year-old man” whom she met on ‘Fortnite’ in June 2022.

She said that over the past two weeks, “they’ve had intercourse on several occasions, with the last incident happening about two days ago,” according to the documents. Given the nature of the allegations, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit contacted the victim’s home and resumed the investigation from there. The victim was then taken to the Children’s Advocacy Center, where a case coordinator conducted a forensic interview to gather more details about the victim’s alleged relationship with Atkinson.

However, the victim confirmed to authorities that they both knew each other’s ages when they first agreed to have sex in Atkinson’s work van. The victim claims that Atkinson “entered her vagina, anus and mouth with his penis”. According to the report, Atkinson later dumped her in front of a supermarket.
The affidavit says the second alleged rape occurred about a week later at Atkinson’s Fort Meyers home and involved similar sexual acts in which Atkinson’s condom broke. “Afterwards, [Atkinson] took the victim to a nearby Walgreens where he purchased Plan B and gave it to the victim as a precaution because the condom broke,” the documents said.

The third time they engaged in sexual activity was near the victim’s home just three days before she was interviewed by the Children’s Advocacy Center’s case coordinator. Soon, detectives arrested Atkinson for questioning from his home, and Atkinson agreed to speak to the officers without a lawyer present. “During his post-Miranda statement [Atkinson] confirmed that he and the victim had met at the video game Fortnite about five months earlier. The two began a friendship that later became romantic in nature. They began communicating via Discord, a phone application that people use to text, chat and make video calls,” the affidavit reads, Law & Crime reports.
He went on to say, “[Atkinson] he admitted knowing the victim was a minor because she had told him she was sixteen. However, she said the victim told him her age didn’t matter to her. [Atkinson] she also said she was unaware of the legal age of consent.

Apparently, Atkinson is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 30 and is being held on $100,000 bond.
