We don’t need to tell you that parenting is challenging. There is no manual and none one size fits all. So it is logical that you will sometimes have questions and dilemmas. Every week on Kek Mama we share a dilemma from our readers. This week: Nina (33) is unsure whether to replace her two sons’ plastic lunch boxes and drinking cups with stainless steel versions.
Nina (33): “More and more children in Charlie’s (4) and Bobby’s (6) class come to school with a stainless steel cup and lunch box. I understand that. You read more about BPA, plasticizers and the harmful substances that can be released and are dangerous for small children.
I don’t want my sons to ingest bad stuff so replace the plastic lunch boxes and cups with stainless steel, but my boyfriend thinks I’m exaggerating.

Small amounts not harmful?
According to him, there are strict laws and regulations in the Netherlands which say that plastic may not contain many harmful substances. According to him, it has not been scientifically proven that small amounts of BPA are harmful. According to my friend, you can’t eat anything or buy prepackaged food, because many products contain BPA.
A marketing truck
He thinks it’s a marketing ploy to buy more stuff and sell more stainless steel lunch boxes. These are much more expensive than the plastic variants. It costs about 100 euros to replace everything. He believes that the uncertain, restless soulswho fear they are poisoning their offspring. Although it is associated with such low BPA levels, they are absolutely negligible according to him.
Stainless steel bread bin
My kids also don’t like to switch to stainless steel lunch boxes. They now have a Paw Patrol lunch box, and the stainless steel variants are available with much less fun prints, colors and famous figures. In fact, there are almost none. Most are just boring gray.
a dilemma
Even so, it continues to worry me. Is it not that bad to consider how harmful these small amounts of chemicals are or am I being crazy? And will I follow my perfection and protect my children from everything? I would prefer the lunch boxes and cups must be replaced today, but I want to do it in consultation with my friend.
I know what other parents do. Are you getting carried away by the stainless steel hype? Do you replace the items when a plastic lunch box breaks? Or, as a precaution, eliminate all plastic? Or is it nonsense and the dangers taken out of context?
