Dijon’s Cité de la Gastronomy: A Costly Attraction with Limited Impact on the City’s Economy

When you arrive at Dijon station (Côte-d’Or), you cannot miss the direction signs towards the Cité de la gastronomy. It is the city’s newest tourist attraction. Inside, modern halls with food shops and restaurants, as well as a gastronomy museum with numerous digital equipment. Covering 10,000 square meters, an impressive showcase for French cuisine which, clearly, does not whet the appetite of many visitors. The place has welcomed more than a million people since its opening in May 2022. In reality, this figure only takes into account the number of passages. 40% of visitors do not spend money in the city, which surprises Emmanuel Bichot, opposition municipal councilor of Dijon (Côte-d’Or). The structure cost a lot of public money. According to our information, 40 million euros were invested by the State, the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region and especially the city of Dijon. The latter even became manager of the museum, due to lack of private financing. The town hall believes in its project. She believes that the city welcomes more and more visitors.
