This is one of the novelties of the year 2023. From next January 1, even the communities not yet affected by the extension of the separate collection instructions will have to implement this flagship measure of the energy transition law for green growth in 2015. To improve collection sorting of household waste, especially plastic, this requires that all packaging is henceforth recovered and no longer buried in landfills.
A measure already applied in large cities and in about two thirds of France, which the metropolis of Dijon must therefore implement. For Dijonese, the task of trash cans will be simplified. You no longer have to think about the composition of your tray, your yogurt maker or any plastic film: all this waste can be thrown in the yellow bin. If the change is simple for the inhabitants, it requires significant investments from the community. In fact, the latter had to significantly increase the surface area of its sorting centre, which went from 2,700 to 4,500 m2. Enough to receive 35,000 tons of waste a year, against the previous 30,000, from the 23 municipalities of the metropolis.
“The sorting center will not only be expanded but also modernized: new machines are being installed, capable of processing new waste and accelerating the pace. The investment is estimated at 29.75 million euros”, indicate the services of the metropolis.
Hazardous waste
To go even further, the community has set up an innovative collection service for so-called dangerous household waste, such as chemicals. Entrusted to its delegate Dieze, a subsidiary of the Suez group, this service is provided thanks to a van in which to deposit household cleaning products, cans of paint, light bulbs, batteries and ink cartridges. . In 2021, 340 tons of hazardous household waste were collected in the five collection centers of the metropolis.
It should also be noted that this year too the metropolis is organizing a collection of Christmas trees which, once recycled, are used as mulch in the plantations of the municipalities in the area.
