Dijon Cameri: Promising Salzburg lad, Bruno Fernandes-like, attracts top Europeans

Like many young Salzburg players, both local and recruited from abroad, Kameri’s first football debut came as a regular with FC Liefering, the second division club that could be considered Salzburg’s reserve team.

Cameri made his debut in August 2021 and was a regular starter throughout last season, though his raw offensive numbers don’t make things stand out, scoring once and providing just four assists in 22 games.

It was a different story in the UEFA Youth League where his name rose a lot thanks to a string of impressive performances as Salzburg reached the final.

Once again, Camiri’s attacking form didn’t show, scoring two goals including one in the semi-final win against Atlético Madrid and assisting two goals in eight games.

But the way he was able to decide the matches, his courage with the ball and his leadership in the press paved the way for the Austrian team on a great way to the championship and attracted the attention of the best Europeans.

Although Salzburg were eventually defeated 6-0 by Benfica in the final, Cameri’s performances put him in the spotlight of European media and observers.

So it came as no shock when he was handed a new four-year deal in the summer of 2022 with him officially promoted to the first team.
