Banners in hand, giant balloon in the air, a dozen members of the Bourgogne Franche-Comté Collective for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons took over the gardens of the Departmental Council on Thursday around 3 p.m. On the eve of the commemoration of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (76 years ago), they wanted to challenge the elected officials of the Department and the Region.
“We want them to intervene with the French government for the ratification of the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TIAN), which entered into force on January 22, 2021. France must take the initiative in nuclear disarmament”, explains the group. “The Region and the Côte-d’Or have a role to play, because the CEA Valduc, which takes care of the maintenance and testing of France’s nuclear warheads, is located on their territory. This represents an environmental, health and military threat to the populations. As a result, the capital of the Dukes of Burgundy would be a potential priority target in the event of nuclear war. “
After several minutes spent in the garden and distributing leaflets, the members of the collective entered the premises of the Regional Council. They were able to present their demands to the director of general services. As every year, the collective organizes from August 6 to 9 of the actions and a fast for nuclear disarmament.
