Digitallotsen Bremen supports companies with digitization

Cash register systems, sales channels, online advertising – almost everything in retail is digital. Not all entrepreneurs are familiar with the possibilities, opportunities and risks of digitization. In Bremen there is unparalleled and free support from Digital.

The team, made up of Malte Breford, Caroline Lehnigk and Eike Stührmann, together with the Bremen Economic Development (WFB) and offers help with individual support, at public information events and with funding requests. Five years on, the digital pilots have now supported more than 200 companies with digitalisation.

While Malte took the project forward alone at first with a part-time position, funded by the Senate for Economic Affairs, Ports and Transformation, in 2021 there was an increase: in terms of personnel and finances. “With more budget, we were able to expand and develop the project in the WFB,” said Caroline Lehnigk. Like Eike, she is now a contact for companies in a wide range of industries as a digital pilot – from start-ups to long-established Bremen family businesses.

Digital pilots complement each other well

All three digital pilots are “classic career changers” themselves, and two are also self-employed in addition to their work at the economic development agency. “We come from different areas and bring different perspectives,” Breford said of their professional backgrounds (from startup founder to urban and regional developer to economist). They complement each other – which helps to find pragmatic solutions.

The digital pilots are only responsible for the input – “ultimately we let people take the first steps,” explains Caroline. The consultations often also address the concerns and fears of the clients. “We talk to each other as equals and get ideas from the ground,” said the expert. Ultimately, the goal is to “make everyday business more efficient through technical innovations”.

In addition to the individual, cross-industry support, there are training courses on various digital topics, new laws and more. “We want to remove the fear of digitization,” said the professionals.
