Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) Transition to HD: Important Information for Users and Installers

Start the countdown so that starting February 14, Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) will be seen exclusively in high definition (HD)which will mean that those old televisions that only receive the standard definition (SD) signal “turns off”. The City Council of Moaña has received a communication from the Council Office of the Association of Telecommunications Enxeñeiros of Galicia where they are at your disposal to resolve doubts, also aware that local entities have no responsibility in this matter, but to help and above all in those areas where DTT coverage is difficult and in anticipation of demand for information by users.

In the communication, they report that the change does not affect users who receive DTT with a normal antenna and who have a television with a compatible integrated decoder, or external in the case of old televisions, which in the latter case will have to change the HD-compatible decoder with a price of around 30 euros. On the other hand, users who do not have DTT coverage and receive satellite television signal with a satellite dish, they will lose the signal with the current receivers, if they were installed before 2017, since they are not compatible with the HD signal and they do not have the possibility of being updated. The solution, as reported to the Council, is to replace this equipment with other compatible ones, which can only be purchased through authorized installers, with an approximate cost of 500 euros. If the updates are not made, satellite television users will stop receiving the television signal on February 14.

In communication, send a list of authorized installersalthough in the case of Moaña not updated since Gonzalo Chorén still appears, who has already retired, and took over Roberto Álvarez, from the company Serelectronic. The installer assures that the vast majority of televisions already have the SD and HD channel repeated, so the change will mean that they will start watching the channel only in HD high definition. There will be old televisions, of good brands that last more than 10 years, that do not have this double channeland if the user wants to continue using the device they will have to purchase the decoder.

In the case of satellite dishes, he points out that few are in use because the majority of users receive the signal through fiber, although they are still on the roofs, but not working. At the moment he assures that they are not receiving many calls and that It will be when they press the button and they do not have TV when they do it to their technicianbut he doesn’t think it will happen to many users.
