Digital Foundry: Silent Hill 2 remake looks great, but has issues

The developers at Bloober Team were faced with the extremely difficult task of creating a remake of one of the most popular games of all time. As already known from the reviews of Silent Hill 2, the project was a great success, as can be seen from the ratings in the media.

But what about the technology part of Silent Hill 2 from the Krakow studio? The new Silent Hill 2 takes full advantage of Unreal Engine 5 technology, and as a result, everything looks amazing. The character models are fantastic, the lighting looks very atmospheric thanks to the Lumen system, and on top of that, the game’s locations are beautifully drawn and detailed.

And although the game looks visually stunning, its technical condition on Unreal Engine 5 can be called good, although it is far from perfect. Therefore, when using the quality mode, the game does not have full 4K, and the dynamic resolution is close to what is often seen on the Xbox Series S, and not on the PlayStation 5. At the same time, in the performance mode, the resolution drops even lower – to 864p, at the level we say World of monster hunter for Xbox One.

Unfortunately, in both cases it is not possible to achieve a smooth finish. In quality mode there are drops of 1-3 fps below 30 fps, and in performance mode there are constant drops of up to 40 fps, although a constant 60 fps is often seen in the city. Due to the instability of the frame rate and the effect on the visual image, Digital Foundry experts recommend using the “Quality” mode on PS5.

  • Quality mode – 1224-1512p with a frequency of 27-30 fps
  • Performance mode – 864-1152p with a frequency of 40-60 fps

Let us remind you that Silent Hill 2 will be released on October 8 on PS5 and PC, and for those who bought the Deluxe Edition – tomorrow, October 6.
