CD Projekt RED’s highly anticipated add-on for Cyberpunk 2077, Phantom Liberty, is set to release in three months. However, Digital Foundry specialist Thomas Morgan has already conducted a preliminary technical analysis of the add-on.
Using 4K gameplay videos provided by CD Projekt RED, Morgan examined the same introductory mission of Phantom Liberty on a PC running Windows 11, as well as on the PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles. On consoles, the add-on ran at 45-60 fps without ray tracing, with drops being more noticeable on the PS5. The resolution ranged from 900p to 1440p, upscaled to 4K using FSR 2.0. On PC, the game ran at 30fps with ultras and path tracing enabled.
Morgan praised the visuals of Phantom Liberty on the PS5 and Xbox Series X, but noted that the consoles were graphically inferior to the PC version with Ray Tracing: Overload, which offered “incredibly realistic shadows and reflections.” He stated, “Judging by the video, Phantom Liberty is a very nice addition even at 60fps in performance modes on PS5 and Series X, but PC players will get the best version of Dog City.”
Morgan also expressed confidence that CD Projekt RED still has time to optimize the performance of the console versions of Phantom Liberty. He believes the studio has the potential to implement “something really special” in addition to the already impressive visuals.
