Digital Foundry dived into the world of Hogwarts Legacy for Switch and talked about the technical side of the project

The Switch port of Hogwarts Legacy has been getting a lot of attention lately, and several videos have already appeared analyzing how it works. And now technical analysis experts from Digital Foundry have published an analysis of the game’s performance and its comparison with other versions.

Unfortunately, Digital Foundry concluded that this version of Hogwarts Legacy doesn’t perform well enough to recommend it, although they think “less discerning players” might still enjoy it.

Lighting has been simplified, occlusion and other real-time lighting effects have been completely removed. Many objects in the environment look much worse than before, they have been replaced or completely removed. From a distance the textures look good, but up close they aren’t as nice. In the open world, there is significantly less tree foliage, shadow quality, draw distance, and NPC animations have been degraded. Loading screens (15 seconds in some areas and up to 40 seconds in others) began to separate some areas of the open world Handheld mode 720p, handheld 576p, no other noticeable cutoffs for handheld mode Maximum frame rate is 30 fps, but often drops to level 20 or lower depending on what’s happening on screen

Overall, this is a fairly specific, if boldly crafted, port that offers Switch owners one of the biggest games out there without having to play in the cloud, which is tolerable.
