Digital culture bringing China and ASEAN closer – Opinion

Headline: ASEAN Emerges as a Digital Powerhouse, Aiming for $295 Billion Economy by 2025

With its GDP nearing $4 trillion, ASEAN is now the world’s fifth-largest economy, boasting a burgeoning digital economy poised to change the global market dynamics. The association, comprising ten Southeast Asian nations, is uniquely positioned to leverage its demographic dividend and growing consumer markets, especially in the digital realm.

A Demographic and Economic Force

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), home to nearly 700 million people, is not just a geographical entity but a significant economic player on the world stage. The region’s young, working-age population is crucial as it enters a new era of economic development. With a projected digital economy worth approximately $218 billion in 2023, ASEAN is set to exceed $295 billion by 2025, underscoring the region’s potential as a hub for digital innovation.

Internet penetration in ASEAN now surpasses the global average, expected to reach 91.97 percent by 2029. Such rapid connectivity is instrumental in fostering various sectors, particularly the digital economy. As ASEAN eyes a future economically larger than Japan by 2030, the synergy between technology and market growth becomes increasingly apparent.

Digital Culture and Global Connectivity

Similar to China’s trajectory, ASEAN’s digital evolution is fostering a unique cultural landscape. Digital products—ranging from video games to streaming content—facilitate a cultural exchange that transcends borders. One noteworthy example is the Chinese video game "Black Myth: Wukong," which has garnered global acclaim and showcased the power of cultural transmission through digital platforms.

Despite translation challenges in markets like Vietnam, local gaming communities jumped in to localize the game’s content, highlighting a proactive embrace of digital culture. Notably, the revival of interest in the 1986 theme song "Celestial Symphony" exemplifies how digital engagement can reignite cultural phenomena and connections across nations.

Chinese Entertainment’s Influence in ASEAN

The influence of Chinese digital media is palpable throughout ASEAN. Streaming platforms such as Tencent’s WeTV, iQIYI, and Youku have made significant inroads, tapping into regional audiences. The appeal of Chinese dramas and variety shows such as "Street Dance of China" is indicative of the growing cultural resonance within the ASEAN community.

Vietnamese adaptations of popular Chinese shows have met with spectacular success, with local winners from talent competitions even crossing over to participate in Chinese versions of these programs. Joint productions like "Chuang Asia" not only showcase diverse regional talents but also reflect the collaborative spirit of cultural exchange.

Cultural Heritage and Collaboration Efforts

Cultural exchanges have found new momentum as ASEAN nations collaborate with China to preserve shared heritage. During a visit in June 2024, Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Malaysian officials agreed to jointly pursue UNESCO recognition for the lion dance as Intangible Cultural Heritage. This strategic partnership builds on previous endeavors like the 2020 joint submission of the Wangchuan ceremony, further solidifying the ties between ASEAN countries and China.

As traditional broadcasters evolve amid the rise of streaming, services like Mango TV are adapting to regional tastes by localizing content, indicating a fluid cultural landscape ripe for exploration.

Building a Collective Digital Future

The pursuit of a unified digital market is crucial for ASEAN in light of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP). This agreement emphasizes the need for inclusivity and fair competition in the digital space. The China-proposed Global Civilization Initiative adds another layer, advocating for mutual understanding through cultural exchanges.

As both ASEAN and China navigate the evolving landscape of digital culture, the ongoing dialogue offers hope for fostering shared experiences. The strength of this partnership lies in the desire to uplift communities and enhance lives through shared narratives and collective aspirations.
