Difficult to Maintain Weight on Vacation? Here’s the Trick to Overcome It

JAKARTA – It cannot be denied that most people find it difficult to get through a long holiday without consuming a lot of food or snacks. Then how do you keep it body weighton this holiday?

In a small study at the University of Bath, UK, researchers asked healthy adult men to increase their usual daily calorie intake by about 50%, to about 5,000 calories a day. At the same time, their physical activity is limited to less than 4,000 steps a day, all to mimic the atmosphere of the idyllic holiday season. Half of the participants added 45 minutes of running every day, but also ate more to make up for the calories burned during exercise.

In just seven days, the researchers noted that the less active group had decreased insulin sensitivity, and also showed significant changes in the way several key genes and proteins in fat tissue interact, which are key to healthy metabolism and insulin response. None of this happened in the group who had exercised every day despite overeating.

“At least in the short term, daily exercise has the ability to counteract the ill effects of excessive diet and sedentary lifestyle effects,” said study author Jean Philippe Walhin as reported by Prevention.

Meanwhile, a personal sports trainer in New York City, Lisa Lynn also recommends choosing metabolic style exercises. While running may be a good idea, metabolic training not only burns fat faster, it also continues to burn calories for 36 hours after you finish exercising. Interval type training even if done for only a few minutes can help burn calories from the many foods you eat during the holidays. “So even if you increase your calorie intake, it will still help to stay active,” added Lynn.
