Difficult to get a job, this scholar chooses to be a host in the Old City

Jakarta

Money exchange services or hostesses are seen starting to line up in the Old City Area, Jakarta. From detikcom’s observation, Saturday (23/4/2022) there were dozens of hosts offering money exchange services on the sidewalk.

Yogi, one of the hosts in Kota Tua, can exchange IDR 5-15 million per day on average. Even at special times such as D-3 Eid al-Fitr, he brings pennies of up to Rp 50 million and can be sold out in a day.

“When it’s crowded, the bank is closed. It can be up to Rp. 50 million,” he told detik.com.

According to him, the number is not too large. For bosses who have capital, on average they carry IDR 75 million in their pockets.

Yogi admitted that he is quite grateful for his current profession. This is because he has difficulty finding work even though he has received a bachelor’s degree since November 2021. “Accounting (bachelor) is difficult, there are many competitors,” he said.

Meanwhile, the money most in demand at Yogi’s stall is in the Rp 5,000, Rp 2,000, and Rp 10,000 denominations. Meanwhile, the ones that did not sell well were the Rp 20,000 denomination. When asked if all the money belonged to him, Yogi confirmed.

“If I’m a solo player, the capital is mine,” while showing a bunch of loose change in his backpack.

For information, not all sources of host capital come from their own funds. Some work for their respective bosses and only help offer services.
