On Thursday evening, freezing rain is expected in Kurzeme and during the night in the central and eastern districts of Latvia – again, which will create heavy icing on the roads.

At night, heavy fog is also forecast throughout the country. Therefore, when planning trips, meteorologists advise to take into account the extra time on the road and be especially careful at the wheel – to choose a safe driving speed and distance. Road icing can recur, even after treatment with reagents.

In the first days of the new year, meteorologists predict a thaw, in which particularly difficult driving conditions may occur on gravel roads, which are maintained with a layer of snow in winter.

Dangerous sections of these roads are corrugated and sanded as needed, but in these conditions it is not effective because the melting snow and rain washes away the sand from the road, but the corrugation melts.

Motorists should be aware that gravel roads may be very slippery in the thaw, as melting snow and rain form a layer of ice. It should be borne in mind that the condition of the road can change very rapidly in such conditions.

Those who travel on gravel roads on a daily basis must be prepared for winter driving conditions, including thawing, and be equipped accordingly, using studded tires if necessary.

Meteorologists recommend choosing the speed and driving style that suits your driving conditions. Pedestrians and cyclists must also be very careful in these weather conditions.
