Here are three versions relating to Masyita’s death at the event:
Eyewitness explanation
Firstly, an eyewitness named Ikram Saputra said that the victim was going for a jog in the Hasanuddin field, not far from the tug-of-war site. Since there was a tug-of-war competition for the MURI record, the victim also participated.
“Actually, when I wanted to jog, it turned out that there was a tug-of-war competition, a MURI record,” Ikram told detikSulsel at the site on Sunday (12/18).
Ikram said the victims and their group lost, so the victims were drawn to the front. At that moment, the victim fell and hit the asphalt.
The committee calls out the selfie victims
Meanwhile, a committee member on behalf of Nursalim issued a different statement. He said the victim was a participant in the tug-of-war competition at the Unhas South Sulawesi IKA.
“This incident was unintentional, it was not our negligence by the committee,” Nursalim told detikSulsel at the scene on Sunday (12/18).
Nursalim said he saw the victim in the line of tug-of-war participants. He also saw the victim taking a selfie after the tug of war ended.
“After that he played selfies with these women, holding strings playing selfies. It was like it was a tug of war like that. So there was no intentional element,” she continued.
Danny Pomanto’s explanation
IKA Unhas chief Danny Pomanto said the victim died after the tug-of-war competition ended. At the time, the victim was standing on the rope as the rope was pulled so that the victim bounced off the concrete.
“It happened when it started to rain. I was in the middle, it was over (the tug of war event). Apparently the (rope) mines were storing energy (still pulled after the event),” Danny said when he was contacted by detikSulsel, Sunday (18/12).
Danny said there were around 6,000 people in attendance split into two teams. The first team wears red costumes and the second team wears white costumes.
“The ones who won 3,000 people (wearing red shirts), he (the victim) was at the end of the white who lost. He stood on a rope, the rope was whipped (pulled) across his leg then (the victim) it bounced off the concrete,” Danny continued.
