Different from the past, researchers reveal new symptoms of monkeypox

In 185 cases of monkeypox patients studied, researchers found that the most common symptom of monkeypox was the presence of pseudo pustules on the skin. This was revealed in British Journal of Dermatology.

Pustules are lesions on the skin filled with pus. However, in monkeypox patients, pseudo pustules were seen. Pseudo pustules that appear are solid white bumps and do not contain pus.

These symptoms are very clear in the case of monkeypox that is currently happening. So if someone shows symptoms of pseudo pustules it is very clearly a sign of monkeypox, according to research coordinator Ignacio García Doval of the Spanish Academy of Dermatology.

“Monkeypox is often described as pustules filled with pus but in this outbreak the main symptom is seudo-pustules, white, solid papules that look like pustules, but do not contain pus. This feature is very rare in other diseases, so it is a very clear sign of monkeypox,” said Doval.

Seeing the real difference in the symptoms of monkeypox patients today, Doval reminded doctors and other medical workers to pay close attention to the pustules that appear on the patient’s skin.

“It is very important for health workers to pay attention to the appearance of lesions that appear in patients,” Doval advises as quoted by The Sunon Friday (5/8/2022).
