Jakarta (Lampost.co) — Fever is a common symptom when the body is not fit. However, there are differences in the symptoms of fever in dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) and covid-19.
During this time of the COVID-19 pandemic, of course, it is very important to know the difference between the two. Given, the treatment given will be different.
Fever in covid-19 is a respiratory symptom
Tropical disease and infection expert from Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM), Dr. Erni Juwita Nelwan, SpPD, revealed that the fever in COVID-19 is more of a respiratory symptom.
“Covid-19 can not come from fever, but rather respiratory symptoms. For example, there is cough, shortness of breath, anosmia, then respiratory problems, diarrhea and so on,” said Dr Erni in a written statement.
Meanwhile, respiratory symptoms in DHF are very small in adults. Less than five percent, even one percent did not arrive.
“So it means that if it comes only because of fever, without respiratory symptoms, the first is because it’s still a pandemic, I think we still have to make sure there is Covid-19 or not,” said dr. Ernie.
The febrile phase of DHF due to viremia
The causes of fever in dengue and covid-19 are also different.
“When asked whether the pattern of fever is different? It’s actually different because in dengue fever, the fever phase occurs due to viremia,” said Dr. Erni.
According to dr. Erni, viremia means there is a virus in the blood. As a result, the fever can be suddenly high.
“Why is that? Because the cause of the fever is still there,” he explained.
It is estimated that the life span of the virus in the blood is about three days. During that time, the virus circulates in the blood.
“So this is the difference. Fever in dengue fever is difficult to reduce with medicine. It goes down for a while, half an hour, but later it usually rises again,” continued Dr. Erni.
Symptoms of fever in DHF patients
When fever, DHF patients will sweat a lot because of the side effects of these fever-reducing drugs. “He tried to reduce the heat but on the one hand the cause of the fever was there,” said Dr. Erni.
Another dejala is a headache. “In patients with dengue fever, usually a typical headache, which is in front or behind the eyeball,” concluded Dr. Erni.
