KOMPAS.com – Myoma and adenomyosis are both health problems that appear in a woman’s uterus. Both have some similar symptoms, for example heavy bleeding and pain during sexual intercourse.

Both myoma and adenomyosis are diseases that are influenced by high estrogen levels which are often found in women of reproductive age.

Because they have some similar symptoms and risk factors, some women may find it difficult to differentiate myoma and adenomyosis.

What is the difference between myoma and adenomyosis?

Obstetrician specialist Dr. Relly Yanuari Primariawan, SpOG (K), explained that myoma and adenomyosis have a distinctive similarity, namely in the form of a tumor or lump in the uterus.

Myoma and adenomyosis also cause heavy bleeding, some patients even need transfusions or blood donations.

Apart from that, myoma and adenomysos can both cause fertility problems and cause pain during sexual intercourse.

Even though they have many similarities, Relly explained that myoma and adenomyosis are different. The easiest difference between two female reproductive problems is the severity of the symptoms.

According to doctor Relly, the pain caused by adenomyosis is usually more severe than from myoma.

“Only adenomyosis is more painful than myoma. In general it is difficult to differentiate myoma and adenomyosis. But after being examined by a doctor there is a difference,” said Relly, quoted from Antara, Tuesday (19/9/2023).

The difference between myoma and adenomyosis can also be seen from the location of the tissue found in the uterus.

Tumors in myoma sufferers are usually localized or only found in one area of ​​the uterus. Meanwhile, tissue in adenomyosis sufferers usually spreads to the uterine tissues.

This characteristic makes myoma easier to remove via surgery, rather than adenomyosis which tends to root in the uterus. As a result, the risk of recurrence is higher after removal of adenomyosis.

Reporting from the Mayo Clinic, the origin of tissue growth in myoma and adenomyosis is also different. If myoma originates from the myometrial muscle layer, adenomyosis originates from the endometrial layer that grows on the uterine muscle.

To determine whether someone has myoma or adenomyosis, a series of examinations need to be carried out by a doctor.

This examination usually consists of observing the symptoms experienced, pelvic examination, ultrasound, and MRI of the uterus.
