Difference between Chlorophyll and Chloroplast and Their Function in Photosynthesis

Bobo.id – Photosynthesis is the ability of plants to convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen by utilizing sunlight.

Photosynthesis is carried out by green plants that have high levels of chlorophyll in their leaves. This is the reason why trees are called oxygen producers in the world.

However, in plant science, we recognize various types of oplant organs that play a role in photosynthesis.

These include chlorophyll and chloroplasts. Both have similar names, but do they function the same?

Chloroplast

Chloroplasts are a type of plastid organelle, found in the cells of plants and other photosynthesizing eukaryotes.

The location of chloroplasts is more precisely in the palisade tissue which is round or oval in shape, and is scattered in the cytoplasmic fluid.

The structure of the chloroplast is composed of an outer membrane, an inner membrane, and a membrane when it is referred to as a thylakoid.

Chloroplasts contain two types of pigments namely chlorophyll and carotenoids. Chlorophyll is what gives it its green appearance.

So, chloroplast is a tissue that wraps around chlorophyll which is the green substance of leaves.

Chlorophyll

Chlorophyll is a green pigment that captures the energy of sunlight, for example red, blue, purple light, and reflects green light.

Due to the presence of chlorophyll, the leaves of plants can have a green color. Chlorophyll functions to absorb sunlight in the light reactions of photosynthesis.

The light reactions occur when plants get sunlight as a raw material for photosynthesis, and produce oxygen as the main product of hydrolysis of water.

Chlorophyll plays a role in the light reaction, while during the dark reaction there is a sugar synthesis reaction, so the main molecule produced is sugar.

Stomata are located in the leaf epidermis tissue, which functions to open and close according to environmental conditions.

First, photosynthesis can be carried out by green plants if there are abundant levels of carbon dioxide and sunlight.

At that time, stomata will open to absorb carbon dioxide, while chlorophyll will absorb light.

During the day, the stomata are generally open so that carbon dioxide can enter the leaves to be used in photosynthesis.

However, in plants that can live in dry areas, the stomatas will be open at night.

At the same time, water from the soil is absorbed by the roots to be carried to the leaves.

Well, the process of photosynthesis is in the leaves, especially in the part called the chloroplast.

Photosynthesis aims to convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and hydrogen.

Hydrogen is needed by plants to grow and develop, while oxygen is released to the outside.
