Diet named to help with type 2 diabetes

Results of a new study by a large international team of scientists published In the magazine The BMJ.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is the most common form of diabetes worldwide. Dieting for this disease is the most important part of treatment, but it is still not completely clear which diet should be preferred, since the results of studies on this topic are rather contradictory.

To try to clarify this issue, the authors analyzed data from 23 clinical trials involving more than 1,300 patients with type 2 diabetes aged 47 to 67 years. All of these studies looked at the efficacy and safety of low and very low carbohydrate diets compared to other types of diets, mostly low in fat.

On a low-carb diet, a person gets less than 26% of their total calories from carbohydrates per day, and on a very low-carb diet, they account for less than 10% of the calories received per day.

The participants received a daily energy intake of approximately 2,000 kilocalories. Study participants were on these diets for at least three months.

As a result, scientists came to the conclusion that the most effective and safe diet is a short-term (no more than six months) course of a low-carb diet. It allows you to achieve remission of the disease (a steady decrease in the level glucose in the blood) with a reduced dosage of drugs or even without their help at all, and also leads to weight loss, improved blood biochemical parameters and an increase in the quality of life. The very low carbohydrate diet has proven to be less effective.

Although all of these benefits gradually disappear six months after stopping the diet, scientists still recommend that patients with type 2 diabetes moderately reduce their carbohydrate intake periodically for several months. But this must be done under close medical supervision, the researchers emphasize.
