Diesel with a record high price in Germany

The prices of motor fuels have been rising for months

The price of diesel in German gas stations has reached a record high, the German Motorists’ Union (ADAC) announced today, quoted by DPA and BTA.

The average price in the country hit 1,555 euros ($ 1.80) per liter yesterday, exceeding the previous record of 1,554 euros, set on August 26, 2012.

Gasoline is also on track to reach record levels. E10 was trading yesterday for 1,667 euros per liter, which is 4.2 eurocents below the previous maximum, reported on September 13, 2012.

The prices of motor fuels have been rising for months, driven by the rise in crude oil prices. In the case of diesel, growth is also stimulated by the demand for fuel oil for heating, which traditionally increases in autumn.

The price of carbon dioxide of 25 euros per tonne since the beginning of the year has also contributed between 6 and 8 cents to the final value per liter of motor fuel.

The change is abrupt, notes DPA. Last year, the coronavirus pandemic led to a drop in demand, causing crude oil and fuel prices to fall before the trend reversed in November 2020.

The rise in prices also provoked a political debate, as taxes make up a large part of the final price of fuel. For diesel, about 25 cents goes to VAT, 47 cents to excise duty on mineral oils and about 7 cents to the price of carbon dioxide emissions.
