January 1st is synonymous with changes in various areas: municipalities, driving licenses, minimum wage, returns, etc. But for some motorists, they will also have to be vigilant in certain cities, because traffic will be prohibited for them. This is particularly the case for certain vehicles running on diesel, recalls Econostrum. In all, fifteen municipalities have decided to ban the oldest diesel vehicles, that is to say the most polluting. Among them, there are the metropolises of Lyon, Strasbourg and Grenoble, but also twelve surrounding municipalities of the Isère city.
Initially, all these cities had banned the circulation of vehicles classified as Crit’Air 5 or not possessing a sticker. As a reminder, the air quality certificate (Crit’Air) is mandatory for vehicles circulating and parking in low-emission mobility zones decided by communities, as well as for vehicles circulating in the event of implementation of the differentiated circulation decided by the prefects during an episode of pollution. From now on, from January 1, all vehicles classified in Crit’Air 4 will no longer be able to use the roads of these municipalities.

Crit’Air 2 vehicles banned in 2028?
Vehicles with the Crit’Air 4 sticker are Euro 2 diesel cars or Euro 3 heavy goods vehicles. These are more precisely vehicles registered between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2005 or two-wheelers registered between January 1, 2001 and December 31, 2005. June 2000 and June 30, 2004. In total, two million motorists use the roads of all these municipalities. And be careful if you do not respect these prohibitions, because the fine can be steep each time the motorist is caught: 68 euros, and even 135 euros for trucks and coaches.

However, whether in Grenoble or Strasbourg, there will be education before the sanctions, the municipalities concerned wishing to improve air quality above all. Econostrum reminds us that Lyon wants to go even further and eventually ban vehicles running on Crit’Air 2. These are those registered from January 1, 2011 (diesel) and from January 1, 2006 to December 31, 2010 (petrol). But while the measure was scheduled for January 1, 2026, it was postponed to 2028.
