Dier and Lloris to Stay at Tottenham Hotspur for 2023-2024 Season

[OSEN=고성환 기자] Eric Dier (29) and Hugo Lloris (37) ultimately remain at Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham confirmed and announced the squad for the 2023-2024 Premier League season on the club website on the 13th (Korean time). Tottenham explained, “The roster consists of a maximum of 25 players. Eight of them must be homegrown players, and an unlimited number of players under the age of 21 (U-21) can be included.”

Tottenham submitted a full 25-man roster. First, non-homegrown players include captain Son Heung-min, Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma, Eric Dier, Emerson Royale, Brian Hill, Pierre-Emil Hojbjerg, Dejan Klusevski, Hugo Lloris, Giovani Lo Celso, and Ivan. Perisic, Pedro Foro, Richarlison, Christian Romero, Manor Solomon, Michy van der Ven and Guglielmo Vicario were 17 names listed.

There are 8 homegrown players. Brandon Austin, Ben Davis, Fraser Forster, Brennan Johnson, James Maddison, Ryan Sessegnon, Oliver Skipp and Alfie Whiteman made up the minimum number of players. Homegrown status can be obtained by being registered with a club belonging to the English Football Association (FA) or the Welsh Football Association for at least 36 months before turning 21.

Familiar names could also be found on the under-21 list. They are Destiny Udozi and ‘Little Sonny’ Pape Sar, who are playing as starting left backs, as well as Ashley Phillips and Alejo Beliz, who are new additions to the team this summer. They do not occupy a 25-man roster slot and have contributed greatly to Tottenham’s squad management.

What stands out the most are the names of Dier and Lloris. Both players seemed likely to say goodbye to Tottenham, but were included in the non-homegrown list and will continue to play together in the 2023-2024 season. Dier is of English nationality, but grew up playing for Sporting CP in Portugal as a child, so he does not have homegrown status.

As a result, Tottenham will not be able to let Dier and Lloris go at least until the winter transfer market opens in January next year. Dier is expected to play the role of back-up defender to Christian Romero and Mickey van der Ven along with Phillips, while Lloris is expected to take on the role of third goalkeeper after Guglielmo Vicario and Fraser Forster.

Lloris’ farewell to Tottenham seemed like a foregone conclusion. This is because there is only one year left on his contract and he has lost his starting position in the team. He hinted at his move, saying, “The end of an era is approaching. I also have aspirations for something else.” Tottenham is also known to be planning to release him, who has devoted himself to the team for over 10 years, as a free agent.

Lloris has been linked to his home team OGC Nice, Olympique Lyonnais, Lazio and even the Saudi Arabian league. However, he rejected Nice’s offer on the last day of the transfer window, and Lazio also rejected it because it was difficult for him to play as the starting goalkeeper. Tottenham allowed Lloris to skip the pre-season tour so that he could focus on transfers, and gave the captain’s armband to Son Heung-min, but the awkward relationship continued.

The same goes for Dyer. He came close to signing a three-year contract under former manager Antonio Conte, but he continued to perform seriously poorly at the end of last season and was completely pushed out of the competition. After Angie Postekoglu took over as coach, he was completely out of sight.

Dier was placed on the release list due to slow feet, frequent mistakes, poor judgment, and unstable build-up. He was pushed out by Davinson Sanchez this season and could not play a single minute. It is even known that coach Postekoglou prefers center back Ashlip Phillips, who was born in 2005, more than Dyer.

Nevertheless, Dier cried out for staying at Tottenham. He, who has a year left on his contract, said: “I will be at Tottenham. I am 29 years old. I truly believe that my best years are ahead. I don’t just believe it, I know it. My good friends Jan Vertonghen and Moussa Dembele are in their 30s. “We were at our best in the beginning,” he declared.

There were several transfer rumors, but they were all canceled. Burnley, Fulham, Bayern Munich, etc. showed interest in Dier. However, Burnley’s offer for a one-season loan was rejected by Tottenham, and Dier himself rejected the offer to go to Fulham. Munich stopped at a simple level of interest without an official offer.

In the end, Dier remained at Tottenham. It is known that he wants to advance overseas as a free agent in a year. Tottenham Chairman Daniel Levy personally called Dier at the end of the transfer window to discuss a transfer, but ultimately failed to sell him.
