Dieppe Comic Strip Festival: 20 years of passion and whelks (…)

20 and 80 years, that invites to the balance sheet. And to see what the Dieppe Festival is, a festival of long-time enthusiasts: printer, Jean-Pierre Surest is one of the helmsmen of the fanzine Sapristi ! (1983-2003) founded by his nephew Alain Ledouxa publication with an impressive track record: Alfred Fanzine Prize at Angoulême in 1986, Phénix Prize at Audincourt in 1987, Best European Zine at Grenoble in 1989, Fourmi Prize at the Sierre Festival in 1998.

Very moved, Jean-Pierre Surest celebrated his 80th birthday on Saturday evening.

At first, Jean-Pierre was content to lay it out, then he began to interview authors, to publish boards by young designers who, in the meantime, had a career: David Prudhomme, Hugues Labiano, Juan-Maria Cordoba, Nicolas Sternin or the screenwriter Fred Duval.

It was the latter who was master of ceremonies for the Golden Whelks, prize ” to the corruption assumed and to “claimed cronyism” (I quote). Fred Duval, originally from Rouen, summarizes these twenty years of the festival with the “helping hands” given by each and every one, volunteers as often, so that the miracle takes place each year.

He greeted in passing the founder of the Association Normande de Bande Dessinée, Jean-Pierre Surest who, every year, ” half slab after half slab », manages to convince sponsors and benevolent people to finance this festival of passionate friends. Some people remember the cruise to England that the Festival once made and where Moebius had come a year. “He was happy” tells us one of the spectators who was there.

Without further ado, here is the winners of the Bulots d’or 2022, the highest distinction in Dieppe comics:

- Grand master of whelks: Richard Guerineau

The great designer of Chant des Strygesof XIII Mystery, of Charly 9of Only silence… knew, as jury spokesman Fred Duval put it, “ put themselves in danger in recent years to deliver ever more sublime pages. A wonderful designer, humble and friendly, like the Dieppe festival.

- Screenwriter: Jean Dufaux

Jean Dufaux is, after Jean Van Hamme, one of the most important contemporary Belgian screenwriters. Prolific author, we owe him in particular the series Murena, Djinn, La Complainte des landes perdues, Rapaces, Niklos Koda, Barracuda, Conquistador…, and recently graphic novels like The Dog of God, Leather Nose according to Jean de la Varende or A King without Entertainment according to Giono. We owe him two (soon to be three) Blake et Mortimer. He is a great author with thousands of readers who is celebrated here and who you will soon hear in a podcast on ActuaBD.com.

- Whelk of gold colorist: Jérôme Maffre

The Dieppe prize list is one of the few to celebrate colourists. In the case of Jérôme Maffre, we have one of the greatest, he who lit the boards of Carmen Mac callum au The Lion of Judah, of Tango to Old Furnacesit is a great author who is distinguished here.

Short Circuit Golden Bulot: Juan-Maria Cordoba

“Short circuit” means a local author. This is the case of Juan-Maria Cordobaan author published as a kid in the fanzine Sapristi! of Jean-Pierre Surest and who made a career in particular in regional albums (Norman stories and legends, Dieppe between land and sea,…), in advertising communication and in a youth series published by Varou: Nono and Moumoune.

- Bulot d’or special 20 years: Thierry Gioux and Fred Duval

It’s a bit like the “Chocolate Medals” of Blois, a tribute to the faithful of the Festival: Thierry Gioux is the designer among others of Hauteville Housewritten by Fred Duval, the other winner, to whom one owes in particular Carmen Mc Callum, Hauteville House, D-Day, Travis, Renaissance, XIII Mystery and soon Thorgal.

An eclectic track record where genre comics are appreciated in their rightful place, far from teleramesque coteries and Angoumois sermons.
