Diego Simeone vs Manuel Pellegrini: A history of invincibility and struggle in La Liga

That January 7, 2012 marks the origin of Atlético de Madrid de Diego Simeone, who began their era with a 0-0 against Manuel Pellegrinithen in Malaga; the first of nine duels between the two in which the Argentine coach has been invincible for the Chilean coach, now at Betis and with whom he is facing this Palm Sunday in the midst of the fight for the Champions League, between the crossroads that the coach lives in almost every commitment rojiblanco and the pending victory of the man who leads one of the teams that plays best football in Santander League.

The numbers are clearly unfavorable to the Chilean. He zero wins in nine games. In fact, Simeone is the only coach that Pellegrini has not beaten, having played more than five games. Total, six losses and three draws against the Argentine.

The first confrontation between the two was in January 2012, when Simeone made his debut on the mattress bench, at La Rosaleda and the result was a tie (0-0). In that same season, at the Vicente Calderón, Pellegrini’s Málaga lost 2-1. The results were repeated the following season. On 12/13, Pellegrini’s Málaga and Simeone’s Atlético tied at La Rosaleda (0-0) and the Madrid team won at the Calderón (2-1).

Already on the bench of Real Betis, the results are certainly not rosy. So much that accumulates three consecutive losses against Atlético de Madrid, with a balance of eight goals against and just two in favor. The only positive result that he has achieved managing the Verdiblancos came in April 2021, when Tello equalized Carrasco’s opening goal.

Betis has not yet won in the Metropolitan

Even more negative, if possible, are the numbers of Real Betis on their visits to Atlético. There are ten duels that Betis accumulates without winning at the home of Atlético de Madrid. And how much has changed since then. That December 18, 2011 Pozuelo and Santa Cruz sentenced the project of Gregorio Manzano, dismissed a few days later and replaced by Cholo Simeone. Five years passed until the inauguration of the Metropolitan, but the verdiblancos did not win there again. In neither of the two stadiums.

The disastrous streak of Betis, beyond those twelve games without winning, reaches the point of not even having scored a goal in seven years. The last time he did it was in April 2016, when Rubén Castro made up the win for Atlético de Madrid (5-1). Six years, eleven months and 24 days They have passed since Betis celebrated their last goal at the colchoneros’ home.

Since the opening of the Metropolitano, the Verdiblancos have visited five times and, although they opened with a meritorious point (0-0), four defeats have followed. A 1-0 on 18/19 and 19/20, a 2-0 on 20/21 and a tough 3-0 in the precedent of last year.
