New York, Aug 29 (EFE).- The Argentine Diego Schwartzman, who was eliminated this Tuesday in the first round of the US Open, assumed his poor performance against the French Arthur Rinderknech without excuses and admitted that his level was far from what was necessary in a ‘grand slam’.
“They are bad, bad feelings. Very ugly. In every way: tennis, concentration, attitude… In ‘grand slam’ my worst match must have been due to scandal. But hey, it has been a difficult year and it was a game according to the year”, he told the media as soon as the game finished.
Number 114 in the ranking and former number eight in the world, Schwartzman lost to Rinderknech (73) 6-3, 6-4 and 6-2 in two hours and 8 minutes.
Schwartzman, 31, surrendered to a rival who had already beaten him in Tel Aviv 2022 and continues to experience a season marked by difficulties.
“I think my level was too bad, to be honest,” he conceded.
“In recent tournaments I was playing much better, since Roland Garros. I was winning more games than losing. In each tournament I was winning at least one game. But this was the worst in a long time,” he added, assuring that after such a match ” there is no possible analysis because everything was very bad”.
In this sense, the Argentine considered that “he had raised his level in recent months by making the third round at Roland Garros, playing well at Wimbledon, at Queen’s, also in Cincinnati and Toronto.”
“But today I fell back in level in a lot of aspects (…). When the matches are five sets sometimes you can have ‘chances’ even on a bad day, but I was not in the match at any time and It’s a shame but it’s clear that because of the way I played and was on the field I deserved to have a ‘score’ like that”, argued
“Perhaps today in a bad year, where I lost many places in the ranking, where there are few tournaments left in the year and perhaps one has the hope of feeling good again, I had to have two very bad sets and frustration won everything” , indicated.
Questioned by the journalists about whether “there is still hope and the will to continue”, Schwartzman said that the key lies in being able to “compete well”.
“Yes, I don’t know, you never know. The thing is to play and compete well. That way you leave the pitch calmly. Going as I am going today is complicated,” he said.
