Diego Maradona was buried in Buenos Aires

Maradona was buried on Thursday at about 20:00 local time (around midnight CET) during a private ceremony at Jardín Bella Vista Cemetery on the outskirts of the Argentine capital.

Tens of thousands of people had the opportunity to say goodbye to the world champion and Argentine national hero in the presidential palace for the last time on Thursday. Thousands of fans also lined the path taken by a car with his coffin covered with the Argentine flag to a cemetery in northeastern Buenos Aires.

Immediately after Maradon’s death, President Alberto Fernández declared a three-day state mourning and said that the former football player would have a state funeral. At the request of the family, however, the ceremony was eventually private.

According to the Argentine newspaper Clarín, only a small circle of family and friends took part in the placement of the body in the grave in the Jardín Bella Vista cemetery. Maradona rested at the place where his parents Dalma and Diego are buried.
