Peru added another gold at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. This time it was Diego Elías, 26, by beating Colombian Miguel Ángel Rodríguez 3-1 (11-4, 7-11, 11-5 and 11-4 ) and become the two-time South American squash champion.
In April of this year, Diego Elías made history by becoming the first Latin American to occupy position 1 in the world ranking, something that for him “is a dream come true of my entire life.”

His triumphs are doubly applauded since his father José Manuel is his main coach. When he was born, his mother was starting to win his first championships and as soon as he started to walk “I already wanted to get on the squash court.” After that he has won, participated in countless tournaments around the world and has 15 PSA (Professional Squash Association) titles.
He currently lives in Boca Raton, Florida, where he has found a squash club “with friendly people” and, above all, the physical therapist who saved him, two years ago, from having to undergo surgery due to a hip injury.
With this, there are now eight gold medals won by Team Peru at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. The other winners are: Christian Pacheco – Athletics (Marathon), Hugo Ruiz – Cycling (Omnium), Kimberly García – Athletics (Walking), Piccolo Clemente – Surf (longboard), Mafer Reyes – Surf (longboard), Luca Messina – Surf (SUP) and Luz Rojas – women’s 10 00 meters.
