Killer whales are incredibly social animals, but Kiska hasn’t been with anyone since 2011, and she’s suffered terrible loneliness, as well as a lack of space and mental stimulation in her small barren aquarium. says in a statement.

The former MarineLand trainer previously posted footage of Kiska floating and moving slowly, as well as banging her head against the side of the tank she’s in.

How informs Reuters, MarineLand reported that Kiska’s health had worsened in recent weeks.

“The marine mammal care team and experts have done everything they can to keep Kitty comfortable and will mourn her loss,” the park said.

The Animal Welfare Service has checked Kiska’s conditions 160 times since January 2020.

Kiska was the last killer whale to be held in captivity in Canada after a bill was passed in 2019 making it illegal to breed or transport marine mammals in captivity. Her death marks the end of the legal keeping of killer whales in the country.
