Almost exactly two years ago, Travelnews reported for the first time on the largest urban development project in the USA, the “Hudson Yards” in west Manhattan. The new skyline has grown, many projects have taken shape, partners and tenants have been found. Now the Hudson Yards are about to begin their actual tourist launch.
Next week, on Friday, March 15th, the «Vessel» will open. This is the walkable structure in the heart of Hudson Yard’s Public Square & Gardens: The honeycomb structure is 16 stories high and 1.6 kilometers of stairs can be walked on – but it also has lifts. The structure is likely to become the landmark of the Hudson Yards.
Only three weeks later, at the beginning of April, “The Shed»Opened. This is the first art center to commission, produce and present all kinds of performing arts, visual arts and popular culture – in a spectacular, eight-story building in the middle of Hudson Yards, which even has a telescopic outer shell.
Of course, many tourists will visit the new district primarily because of the new skyline. But you don’t just see architecture: over 100 retail stores can be found in the new district – H&M, Zara, Rolex, Sephora, Van Cleef and many more. Of course, the gastronomic offer is correspondingly wide. If you want to sleep in the Hudson Yards straight away, you can do so in the brand new Equinox Hotel from June. The highest viewing platform in the western hemisphere at 30 Hudson Yards (the tallest building in the Hudson Yards) will not open until the end of the year (as planned). It is called – the name was only announced at the ITB – “The Edge”, which in English means, among other things, a “protruding ridge”. And that is exactly what it is: “The Edge” rises 395 meters above the ground in a triangular shape, around 20 meters from the building.
