At Bayern Munich, Lucas Scholl was celebrated as a new star at the age of 17. But for the son of Bayern legend Mehmet Scholl, it was nothing with the great career and appearances in the Champions League. After not being able to assert himself with the record champions due to the massive competition in midfield, he went to Wacker Nordhausen in 2017. The 23-year-old has been back in the Munich region for a few months, playing for VfR Garching in the Regionalliga – and struggling with his time as a former super talent.
Guardiola’s advice to Scholl
“At Bayern, Pep Guardiola said a sentence that was the most beautiful and worst sentence in one. He said: ‘Lucas, you can do everything in football, but you have to change your mind,” said Scholl in an interview with “Sport Bild”.
Guardiola was one of Scholl’s greatest sponsors during his time at Bavaria – which did not only make it easy for Mehmet Scholl’s son. “At the time I was 17 and did not understand what he wanted from me at all,” he explained, and in retrospect is self-critical.
No career tips from the father
Back then he was still a child and too immature. “In the morning I sat at the dining table with my mother and a little later with Götze, Lewandowski and Guardiola in Bavaria’s professional cabin. That was too quick for me,” said Scholl.
He has not given up hope of returning to professional football. “I’ve got so many waddles now, it can hardly get any worse,” said Scholl.
However, he does not talk about it with his famous father. “We never actually talk about football. He knows what I can do and lets me do it.”
