Didn’t pay back fast enough, US sentences six companies

The US Department of Transportation forced six airlines to pay passengers $600 million.

Six airlines have been pressured by US authorities to reimburse more than $600 million to hundreds of thousands of passengers for canceled or modified flights, the US Department of Transportation has announced.

For dragging their feet, Frontier, Air India, TAP Portugal, Aeromexico, El Al and Avianca were also fined a total of $7.25 million, the ministry added in a statement released on Monday.

“Since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, the ministry has received a flood of complaints from travelers relating to airlines’ refusal to provide timely refunds after their flights have been canceled or significantly changed,” he says.

However, for any canceled or significantly altered flight to or from the United States, American law requires airlines to refund passengers if they do not want a voucher or credit for future flights.

“Cancelling a flight is frustrating enough, no one should have to bargain or wait months for a refund,” Transport Minister Pete Buttigieg said in the statement.
