As recently as this morning, colleague Charles-Alexis went there with an interesting thought about the possibility of seeing shortstop player Didi Gregorius return in the striped pajamas of the New York Yankees, for three reasons.
One of the points brought up is the fact that doubts persist over Gleyer Torres’ ability to play consistently at position number six.
But on both points, the former player of the Bronx Bombardiers does not believe it.
“I don’t think they would want me to come back to New York to be honest right now. I think Gleyber is the future. It was only a year and I understand he was injured. I think everything will be fine with Gleyber. “
Admittedly, the sample is rather thin, but Torres never had a reputation for being a defensive marvel either.
As we have seen, injuries did not help him work on this facet of his game. However, seeing him play in second cushion would certainly improve the Yankees’ infield, especially if DJ LeMahieu remains in the Big Apple.
And the team’s general manager, Brian Cashman, is in the best position to find out.
“We will assess whatever circumstances work best for us. He is currently our shortstop. We think he’s capable of better defense. “
It will remain to be seen which avenue the Yankees will adopt, but if it is not Gregorius, other options will be offered to the staff of the New York formation.
For me, Francisco Lindor would be the ideal alternative, despite the fact that owners seem to argue that they want to comply with the luxury tax threshold. After all, it’s the New York Yankees, and the pressure to take top honors, something they haven’t done since 2009, is growing ever greater.
