Monday, October 4, was an unfortunate day if you relied on some Facebook service to communicate. For hours on Monday, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp were inaccessible to users. The problem was finally solved, but it left thousands of people without access to some of the most popular Internet services for much of the day.
Of course, if your favorite messaging service goes down, it won’t stop messaging; find another messaging app that works. And that seems to be what a lot of people did.
Telegram, one of our favorite messaging apps, gained more than 70 million users just one day after the Facebook outage. These 70 million people may not be newly converted Telegram fans (their change may be temporary or short-lived), but still, those numbers are staggering.
But Telegram is just one of the recommended alternatives that is worth using. Signal, an app known for its end-to-end encryption and various privacy features, probably also gained a lot of users during the Facebook outage.
Did you switch to Telegram or Signal during Facebook / WhatsApp outage? Did you already use one of these services? Or did you just sit around while Zuckerberg was on the move, trying to fix his apps? Cast your vote in the poll above; we would love to hear your opinion.
