A fishermen’s house built out of sight, in the middle of the greenery and a few meters from the campsite of Chartres (Eure-et-Loir). It is the headquarters of fishermen from Eure-et-Loir and Navarre. The La Gardonnette Chartraine association has existed since 1907, it is today the one with the largest number of members in Chartres and the largest fishing in Eure-et-Loir.
Thierry Couvray has chaired the Chartres fishing club since 2003, having joined the board of directors of this association in 1984, he has a real “career” there. The Gardonnette has 2,861 members, “there was a certain influx after the confinements, people wanted to go out and get closer to nature”, confides its predict.
Fishing in Chartres is from 7 to 90 years old!
Members who come mainly from the agglomeration, the department and some even “live 300 kilometers from here”! About thirty people ensure the proper functioning of the association as well as the maintenance of fishing points and the organization of events: “we work with fishing guards and volunteers”.
More than a dozen ponds are available to fishermen in the town. The association owns three, some for rent and others lent free of charge, against maintenance and surveillance, in the communes of Barjouville and Morancez.
This represents about fifty hectares and twenty kilometers of river banks!
Peach carp, fly, trout, predator… There is something for all tastes and all ages, from 7 to 90 years old! Because fishing federates and unites all generations.
Projects for 2022
La Gardonnette is also, according to Thierry Couvray, “a beautiful showcase” and it must be said that the fishermen shine even internationally. Last year, the Chartrains came 5th at the world championships.
The association always has plenty of projects in mind, such as the development of comfortable wooden pontoons, the repair of a path… But also events in 2022 for fishing enthusiasts: the night fishing for young people, the trout opening in March, and the creation of a “family course” label on the site of Saint-Georges-sur-Eure so that children and parents can enjoy a great day fishing and picnicking.
