This is one of the points of the law against food waste. On January 1, 2024, all French people must have a compost bin for bio-waste. Many municipalities have anticipated the application of the law.
After the end of plastic packaging, the development of bulk, here comes composting. As we told you last April, from January 1, 2024, all French people must have a compost bin at their home or deposit their bio-waste in the compost bins made available by the municipalities in the public space.
It is one of the provisions of the law against food waste of February 2020. When you peel vegetables, when you eat a banana or when you peel eggs for example, you will no longer throw your waste in the black trash can, but in a compost bin.
If you have a garden, you can install a large compost bin. You can find this type of item in wood, aluminum or plastic in garden centres. They have a capacity that can generally range from 150 to 600 liters, and their price varies between 40 and 200 euros.
For the kitchen, garden centers recommend compost bins with earthworms that do the recycling work. They are smaller and have a lid that avoids unpleasant odors.
Most municipalities in France did not wait for the arrival of the law to set up compost bins in public spaces or to provide them to residents, in the same way as garbage cans.
L’agglomeration of Angoulêmehas set up public compost bins for 3 years. Today there are about sixty, by 2024, there will be 120 spread over the 38 municipalities of the agglomeration.
Inl’agglomeration of Poitiers, composters are distributed to residents who have a garden and collective composters are deployed in buildings or in houses that do not have a garden. The agglomeration also offers aid of 15 euros to residents who buy a composter or an individual vermicomposter.
In La Rochellecomposting is an old practice and the website of theurban communityoffers many events around composting as well as the distribution of bins to residents.
In Niort and throughout the CAN (Niort Agglo) also, individual compost bins are available to residents and every week, compostable waste is collected in green bins.
It is estimated that in France each inhabitant throws away 85 kilos of bio-waste each year. However, if they are collected separately, they can serve as a natural fertilizer to enrich the soil. They can also be transformed into biogas which, for example, will run public transport buses.
