Sebastian Vettel decided to retire. Fernando Alonso will surprisingly replace him at Aston Martin. Next year there will be a vacancy next to Esteban Ocon. Alpine junior Oscar Piastri is expected to fill it. But it may not be so certain.
French website AutoHebdo reports that there was a preliminary contract between Alpine and Piastri, but it expired at the end of July, allowing the Formula 3 and Formula 2 champion to negotiate with other teams.
Piastri’s entry into McLaren is at stake. There is not supposed to be a place there next year, but everything can be agreed upon if there is will on both sides. Piastri would replace Ricciardo (who is still under contract) and the Australian would move to Alpine, for which he already drove in 2019 and 2020 – back then, of course, the team was still called Renault.
