In a crazy scenario, Argentina and their leader, Lionel Messi, fulfilled their first crowning dream since 1986 and reached the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, beating the Netherlands 4-3 on penalties after the end of the original and extra 2-2 on Friday in the quarterfinals at Lusail Stadium.
Nahuel Molina opened the scoring for Argentina with a magical assist from Messi, and the latter added the second from a penalty kick. However, substitute Vout Fijkhorst reduced the deficit in the 83rd minute, before equalizing in the 11th minute of added time.
The two teams resorted to two extra periods, and then to penalties, in which goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez shone by blocking two balls.
Argentina will meet Croatia in the semi-finals on Tuesday at the same stadium, having eliminated Brazil 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
