The 21-year-old striker has been recruited from Moreirense in the Portuguese top league and has signed a contract with MFF over the year 2025. Malik Abubakari did not make appearances for that team, but it was as a loaner at Casa Pia that he got his breakthrough. In that club, Abubakari last season scored eleven goals in 32 matches in Portugal’s second division.

– I was so happy that Malmö FF wanted me. I had many offers and needed to decide where I was going, which is why I was so happy about Malmö’s interest.
–
Were there offers from other Swedish clubs?
– No. There were offers from a Polish team, from Belgium and Portugal, in addition to Malmö FF.
– If you look at the situation with covid, it is a bit difficult for clubs to buy players and make transfers. When this type of team – in the situation we are in – was interested, then I did not have to think twice. It was just to move and accept the offer. I am happy to move here with this type of long-term contract. Now it is important to find time and adapt as quickly as possible to help the team, says Malik Abubakari.

The Ghanaian will primarily compete with the strong Antonio Colak in the center position in MFF.
– If you look at Antonio Colak, he is a very good striker who has scored many goals. He has helped the team to reach many points and is very good in my opinion. He’s a great guy and I have a lot of respect for him. I’m not here to compete against any of my teammates. If it’s as little as a minute of play left over for me, I need to deliver what I have for the club. Now I’m part of the family. I’m just at the beginning now, it’s not about fighting to take a position or something like that, says Abubakari.
He describes himself as a flexible striker who primarily starts from the central position.
– As a player, I am used to different playing styles, and usually do not have a single type of playing style. I try to learn what the coach wants in the game and what I can deliver for the club. Malmö FF is the largest team in Sweden and used to winning. I am a person who hates to lose and always wants to be part of a winning team, says Abubakari.
He continues:
–
– As a child, I used to play in many different positions, even on the edge and behind the striker. But after moving to Portugal, people feel like a striker and it was like what I played there. Last season, however, I played on the left or right edge on maybe five occasions. But I love playing as a striker and scoring goals and assists.

Abubakari trained for a week with Moreirense in the pre-season and says that he is ready for games in MFF. On Saturday, the team will meet Degerfors away and the next day a training match against Elsinore is planned. Coach Jon Dahl Tomasson has previously hinted that the new acquisitions play against the Danish team.
–
– I’m just waiting for the chance and the coach’s decision. I’m ready to play – I’m not the type to say I’m not fit enough to play. I am always ready, says Malik Abubakari.
