For more than a month now, Lionel Messi has officially been one of thousands of clubless professional footballers in the world. However, there is little doubt that the Argentine will sign again with FC Barcelona. A year ago, however, there were various options.
It’s been about eleven months since the world of the top Catalan club was shaken by the superstar’s announcement that he wanted to transfer free of charge under a contractual clause. With lots of warm words, concessions and possibly also thanks to the affection of the FC Barcelona fans, the club was able to prevent an ugly divorce from what was actually a dreamy marriage with Messi.
ManCity believed in Messi transfer in 2020
Like the portal The Athletic reported, Manchester City in particular had high hopes for the commitment of the six-time world footballer in 2020. It would have been Messi’s reunion with Pep Guardiola, his former coach at Barca. The transfer would have triggered shock waves that would have been felt across football Europe. It was only when Messi announced his stay in Catalonia that ManCity is said to have targeted Harry Kane as a plan B, so to speak.
Kane in focus again
In terms of sport, the captain of the English national team and his counterpart in the Argentine Albiceleste have little in common. Kane is now set to give ManCity a real striker from the new season after he refused to participate in training at Tottenham Hotspur, which Guardiola has missed due to the aging process of Sergio Agüero (who should now play with Messi at Barca). The dream of the start coach would have been to align the whole game of the English champions with Messi.
