It often shoots from left to right at De slimste mens. The questions, the answers, the topics and the reactions, it can go either way. From Antoon, bagels and Madame Jeanette to Spree, Merlin the Magician and jumping into the Amstel at night. And on Tuesday evening it went from an innocent question about a piece of music (that Valkyrie) suddenly to a venereal disease, which cost candidate Henk Schiffmacher a film role more than four decades ago.
It all started with fellow candidate Tom Kleijn. The television journalist got the question from presenter Philip Freriks in the first 3-6-9 round. Which German composer had written Walküre, the piece of music that has become known to movie buffs through Apocalypse Now. Kleijn was right with Richard Wagner, after which Freriks did not switch to Schiffmacher for nothing. The tattoo king had a thing for that movie classic from the 1970s. To Apocalypse Now, the famous film about the Vietnam War. ,,Henk, the story goes that you almost played in Apocalypse Now?” Freriks asked. That’s right, Schiffmacher agreed. “I was cast in the Philippines to compete to play an American soldier. But I had been dating a lady there in Manila they called the General. She then gave me a nasty illness, so I had to go to Singapore. In fact, I ended my film career with my own dick.”
Freriks: “So you missed out on a Hollywood career?”
Schiffmacher: ,,Yes, otherwise I would have participated in that piece.”
Schiffmacher: “Avontuur is.”
The adventure in De Slimste is over for the oldest participant ever. Schiffmacher (71) had to compete in the final round against ESPN presenter Sanne van Dongen, who accompanies day winner Ton Kleijn to the next round.
‘Memory like a lady’s bag’
Schiffmacher is not dissatisfied with his participation. He had already warned viewers about his shaky memory. He compared his brain to a lady’s bag: ‘Everything is in it, you just have to be able to find it’. The Amsterdammer, who tattooed world stars such as Lady Gaga, Robbie Williams and the band members of Pearl Jam and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, is 71 years old. He told in an interview in this newspaper to be in his tattoo parlor every day. “I don’t tattoo as much as I used to, but I still get involved in everything. And if a Peppers or Coldplay fan comes all the way from Japan or Brazil, I can’t say no.”
He doesn’t want to retire anyway. ,,Mentally I don’t know how to do that and financially it’s not possible. I cannot pay the rent of 920 euros AOW.” During the interview, he pointed to a large folder leaning against the table leg. “I’ll be drawing in the sun soon. I used to enjoy painting as well. With a good sniff I could work all night. I’m too old for that now.”
The first episode of the 22nd season of De slimste mens was watched by more than 2.3 million people on Monday evening.
