Did a hacker attack stop the national census – Bulgaria

Source: Georgi Dimitrov / Vesti.bg

An attempt to attack the Census 2021 information system, which is owned by the National Statistical Institute, was prevented this morning. This was announced by the NSI.

They emphasize that there was no incident to be reported, as the attempt was blocked at the first level of protection – the information site of the census.

What is blocking “Census 2021” later in the day is overloading the connections between the data exchange systems of the various institutions, namely the access to the register of “Bulgarian identity documents”, necessary for verification of the submitted by those wishing to be counted information.

The registration in the electronic system “Census 2021” has already been restored. However, the system operates at greatly reduced capacity.

Technical teams are closely monitoring the work and will gradually increase its capacity. The information is not affected and all data received during the census are protected, the NSI assures.

The electronic system “Census 2021”, through which the electronic census is carried out, has been operating since midnight on September 7 and through 13.00 14177 people have already been counted through it.
