Castellón’s owner, Haralabos Voulgaris, tried it before with Schreuder. “I then thought: third division, I’m not looking forward to that right now,” Schreuder said NOS. “I was in the flow of getting promoted with PEC and wanted to continue. I then put it aside.”
Voulgaris eventually managed to convince Schreuder. “In my opinion, Bob (Voulgaris, ed.) is a very special and hardworking man. I immediately felt a click with him. He works with certain formulas, with data. He apparently did that in gambling, but also in basketball “He has his own vision on that.” The goal is to end up in the Primera División with Castellón in the not too distant future. Voulgaris has mapped out a six-year plan and the four-year contract that Schreuder signed fits into that project.

“We play with a lot of risk. Here in Spain they are very used to it safe to play. It’s fun when you play 600 passes to each other, but when the ball is only in your own half… I find that slow. We tried to get that out.” And with success, Castellón is currently the league leader with 43 points from eighteen games. “When we came here, we showed everything from Zwolle, once, and we said: that’s how we want to play. I could see from the players – and also the Spanish staff – that they thought: that is the coach loco. But it just happened. And they like it.”
