Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel attacked the island’s private transporters, blaming them entirely for the current transportation crisis that Cuba is going through.
During the broadcast of the third episode of his YouTube program, From the Presidencythe communist leader accused private operators of having “abusive prices.”
Díaz-Canel admitted that the country is going through the worst transportation crisis in recent decades, but far from offering solutions or taking responsibility as a representative of the government, he blamed – as usual – external factors and the citizens themselves.
According to the president, private transporters charge excessive prices, in addition to being a burden on the country, because according to him, they do not contribute anything and keep their profits for themselves, in addition to some operating illegally.
“This has to do with the way in which prices are managed, which are actually abusive (…) These do not pay taxes, they are evading taxes, and they are carrying out a commercial operation, also for profit, without fulfilling responsibilities,” he said.
He also indicated that the crisis is also due, in part, to the global crisis, suggesting that the situation is similar everywhere, as with the food crisis.
Díaz-Canel stated that the country does not have the income and fuel necessary to stabilize public transportation, which has a large part of its vehicles stopped, either due to lack of parts and maintenance, or due to lack of fuel.
Faced with all these statements, Cubans did not hesitate to respond, questioning how the little fuel on the island is prioritized for foreigners, for its repressive forces and its political events, while public transportation and ambulances remain out of service.
“If this country is surviving because of individuals because the State does not guarantee anything and when it provides something it is with abusive prices, they are the first”; “You should have mentioned that they use public transportation for the marches and political events that you call, wasting fuel that is not available for them or for the few ambulances that exist in the country because of you”; “You raise the price of gasoline 5 times and expect private transporters not to raise their rates. They have no shame”; “El Sin Casa does not explain why they buy entire boats of patrol cars and cars for tourism, but they never buy a single bus. “So much cynicism,” were some of the comments.
Miguel Díaz-Canel’s statements on transportation come just a few days after The president will also blame citizens for the food crisisasking them to work without pay for the State to resolve the situation.
