The designation of Doctor Boukary Sawadogo, as the best professor of several universities in the United States, finally convinced that the Burkinabè diaspora is one of the values which carry aloud the red banner, green and its yellow star high across the world.
Born on the shores of the Ebrié lagoon, Abidjan, the economic capital of Côte d’Ivoire, he was sent to Burkina Faso for his education. He pockets his A4 series Baccalaureate at Yamwaya High School in Ouahigouya then opts for English language studies at the University of Ouagadougou where he obtains the General University Studies Diploma (DEUG) II before being admitted by competitive examination to the Institute of Applied Foreign Languages of the Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar in Senegal.
He graduated with a Masters in Foreign Languages (English / German) Applied to Tourism and Business. He then returned to Burkina Faso to work on his own as a translator, conference interpreter, and English teacher in a language center. Admitted to the direct competition of foreign affairs advisers, for two years, he trained at the Diplomatic and International Relations Institute and defended his final thesis on the foreign policy of the United States in West Africa. which will allow him to obtain a Diploma of Higher Studies in Diplomacy and International Relations. The apprentice diplomat subsequently obtained a scholarship (assistantship) which opened the doors to the United States.
In the United States, he did a Masters at University of Northern Iowa and a doctorate (with specialization in African cinemas) at University of Louisiana at Lafayette. His first teaching-researcher positions took him to the states of Vermont and Massachusetts before being recruited at City University of New York (City College) where he has been teaching cinema since early 2015.
Dr. Boukary Sawadogo is the author of three books on African cinema: West African Francophone Cinema, 1990-2005 (Harmattan, 2013), African Film Studies: An Introduction (Routledge, 2018), and West African Screen Media: Comedy, TV Series, and Transnationalization (Michigan State University Press, 2019). As an academic, he also has to his credit numerous chapters published in collective works, articles, and critical reviews. In addition, he has produced web and documentary series on the valuation of Africans in the United States.
