Princess Diana’s long-time chauffeur has spoken for the first time in decades and made the bold claim that she would be here today if he had been driving that night.
The mystery and intrigue surrounding her death is still relevant 27 years later as people are still wondering what really happened on that fateful day in Paris.
Just 36 years old at the time of her death, the Princess of Wales died from her injuries in the early hours of August 31, 1997.
The royal traveled in a car with his friend, director Dodi Fayed, along with Diana’s driver, Henri Paul, and Fayed’s bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones in Paris in the early hours of the morning.
As the car is chased by nine journalists through the Pont de l’Alma underpass, something goes terribly wrong.
Paul reportedly lost control of the car and crashed into a column in the underpass, killing himself and Fayed on the spot and seriously injuring Diana and Rhys-Jones.
Firefighters arrived at the scene along with emergency services to try to extricate the injured and transfer them to hospital, where Diana’s last words, “Oh my God, what happened?”, were heard by a firefighter.
Sadly, the former British princess died at 4am in hospital.
Now, however, Princess Diana’s former chauffeur has spoken out about the tragic event, saying: ‘I’d take a bullet for Diana. My work was my life. I was always there for her. From my dream job, I had to start all over again.”
He later claimed, “All I know is that if life had taken a different trajectory, if I had driven her that night in Paris, she would still be here today … because I would have kept her.”
Steve revealed that he “can’t put into words” the grief he felt when Princess Diana was “killed”, reports GlasNews.
A former army officer, he also explains how he was “forced” out of his job after being made redundant after eight years.
For a long time he wondered why, but he had to watch the Netflix series The Crown to find out what happened.
Journalist Martin Bashir apparently spread lies about the driver to try to gain Diana’s trust before his controversial interview with her on Panorama.
He told her that Steve leaked information about her to the press.
Fortunately, in May of this year, Steve received compensation following Bashir’s false claims.
Still not satisfied, Steve states, “He basically told her I was a traitor, when the betrayal was his all along.”
