The 20-year-old from Russia won 6:4, 6:1 against Gauff, the same age and the top seed in Canada.

Shnaider celebrated her first victory over a top 10 player and is in the round of the last eight at a WTA 1000 tournament for the first time.

Shnaider is thus continuing her strong 2024 season: she has already won three tournaments and moved up the rankings from 60th to 24th, and the trend is rising.

“I know that Coco is very well prepared physically. She runs very well, she covers all the balls and all the angles,” said Shnaider. “So when there were long rallies and I won them, I thought, ‘Wow, I just beat Coco in long rallies. I’m good today.'” He continued: “I tried to keep my cool, but inside I thought, ‘Yes, I did it!'”

Gauff tired and exhausted

Gauff, however, struggled somewhat with her decision to compete in Toronto (on hard court) directly after the Olympic Games in Paris (on clay). She was also not satisfied with her fighting spirit. “I also wanted to test myself a bit. See how I would do when I am a bit mentally tired and physically exhausted.”

In general, things are going well for the US women: Five players are in the quarterfinals – Jessica Pegula, Payton Stearns, Amanda Anisimova, Emma Navarro and Taylor Townsend – strong!

While number one Gauff was eliminated in Toronto, second seed Aryna Sabalenka had no major problems in her 6:3, 6:3 win against Katie Boulter.
