Diana Păun, presidential advisor, Department of Public Health, university professor, endocrinologist at the Bucharest University Emergency Hospital, was invited by Mădălina Dobrovolschi on the show “Piata Victoriei” on Wednesday night, on Europa FM. What can we do for our health and what symptoms should make us think and make us go to the doctor? Diana Păun spoke, among other things, about cardiovascular diseases. “Cardiovascular disease usually increases significantly in women after menopause. Men are open, however, throughout their lives, regardless of their age,” explained Diana Păun.
Diana Peacock: “More than half of Romanian deaths are due to cardiovascular diseases”
Mădălina Dobrovolschi: Cardiovascular diseases, the main cause of mortality in Romania for all genders. What routine checks would be necessary and what symptoms should be looked for?
Diana Peacock: “Mortality due to cardiovascular diseases is the most important, since more than half of Romanian deaths are due to cardiovascular diseases.
I refer here especially to ischemic coronary disease, which may be aggravated by the appearance of an acute myocardial infarction, and to cerebrovascular accidents, which often hide a great deal -an undertreated and often undiagnosed suffering.
For coronary artery disease, the most common manifestation is fatigue, but we can be tired for many reasons. I am specifically referring to the fatigue that occurs when I work hard, when I climb stairs, when I do more physical work than I usually do.
Also, pains should worry us, especially chest pains, but angina pectoris can also appear with more annoying pains, in the shoulder, for example, or to the neck towards the mandible or the back. Something that wouldn’t make you think of heart disease at first. […] But, at first the pain will pass. It also passes independently. But if they are repeated, we have to worry and we have to make ourselves see the doctor”.
Diana Peacock: “Cardiovascular disease increases significantly in women after menopause”
Diana Peacock: “It is true that heart diseases occur in both sexes, but I could say that women are somewhat protected during their fertile life. Cardiovascular diseases usually increase significantly in women after menopause. Men are open, however, throughout their lives, regardless of age.”
Diana Peacock: “It’s good to exercise every day”
Diana Peacock: “Sedentaryism itself is referred to as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, responsible for a significant mortality rate. The best thing is to exercise every day – if we can, half an hour of walking at a pace that is not necessarily very alert. It would be ideal to be able to do rhythmic sports at the gym or in the swimming pool or use sports for pleasure. Tennis is great because it also moves the joints”.
Mădălina Dobrovolschi: What should we know if we have a warning sign that we may suffer from cardiovascular diseases?
Diana Peacock: “First of all, I think the most useful thing is to visit a family doctor. Because the family doctor should know about the suffering of the patients on the list. He can take your blood pressure, do an EKG, do tests, and I don’t mean complicated tests, I mean a lipid profile. Blood Glucose Measurement”.
