Last Thursday, Erika and Reinhard Herrmann celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary with their family, relatives and friends.

“We met each other here in Karbach in the Gasthaus Adler in 1959, when I was just 15 years old,” Erika Herrmann recalls when she first met her future husband.

The young woman from Karlstadt was visiting friends in Karbach at the time. While the adults were sitting in the dining room, 15-year-old Erika crept up to the first floor, where the dance music that was customary at the time was taking place. “I stood at the door because I wasn’t allowed in yet,” reports Erika Herrmann, receiving a nod of approval from her husband, who was 19 at the time.

Three trainings

However, things only “sparked” between the two later, when they met in Hausen near Offenbach. Reinhard was employed there as a tuner at the time, Erika worked in a household. On August 3, 1963, the wedding bells rang for the young couple. The civil marriage took place in Karbach, the church in Mariabuchen by the Karbach pastor Friedolin Rudloff.

The young couple moved to Karbach, and while Erika Herrmann worked at Warema in Marktheidenfeld, the young husband started a second apprenticeship as a lathe operator at Rexroth in Lohr. “In 1973, I started my third training as a nurse at the university hospital,” says the happily married man.

After completing additional training to become a ward manager, he worked at the University Hospital in Würzburg until he reached retirement age. “I’m still in contact with former patients,” says the 84-year-old happily, while his wife adds that real friendships have developed over time.

The 79-year-old wife says crocheting is her hobby, while Reinhard Herrmann likes to paint by numbers. “Dad is an all-rounder and very social,” adds daughter Ilona. Because up to the age of 75 he acted with the Maltese as an accompaniment for the sick on trips to Lourdes or Rome. The happy couple also likes to travel, having been in their own caravan for over 50 years. While it used to go to Croatia, the destinations are now more inland.

Four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren

When asked about the recipe for such a long marriage, the Karbacher only smiles, while Erika Herrmann mentions the mutual trust. “We enjoy every day and are thankful,” the sprightly and mentally active couple confesses with satisfaction.

The happy couple’s family not only includes their two daughters, but also four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
